After a couple of years of
messing around with mini bikes and old hand me down dirt bikes, I bought a brand
new 90cc Kawasaki with all my hard earned lawn mowing money. I was 15 years old.
The passion for riding and the the absolute joy it gives me has never failed
since. As I got older the bikes
got bigger, When I came home from Vietnam, I built a basket case 650 BSA from
the ground up and have rode street bikes since. In 1996 I was forced to take my
Service Connected Disability, so I had lots of free time to ride when my health
permits. Anyone that knows me can tell you I ride ALOT, rather it is by myself
or with a group of friends, covering ground all over the country.
In the spring of 2000 I joined FORR Local 34 and found a bunch of people that not only shared the same desire as me, but also were riding for some very good reasons, like our legal rights, Sierra Osage, Boys and Girls Club, St. Jude's Hospital and just helping out when someone was in need.
I
had always rode what I could afford at the time and had some really good bikes.
My Suzuki 1400 Intruder for one was infamous around here (or maybe it was just
the way I rode it) I put some 40,000 miles on it and it treated me right.
Then in the spring of 2002 my
best buddy Lonnie Robertson came home from Cape one day and told me of a 2002
Super Glide at the Harley dealer there that only had 1,500 miles on it and was
priced right. I took a test ride and
knew
it was the bike for me. In the next 35 months I put almost 50,000 miles on it,
summer, winter, Daytona, D.C., day trips or weekend trips. A lot of that was
riding with FORR. They even let me be Road Captain a few times. One day i took
off, rode South and came home 21 days and over 4,200 miles later.
This past May I bought a 2005
LowRider, Black and Chrome and I named it RED?????????????
It is a GREAT Bike and I have been racking up the miles on it, I just have to ride, I once read the riding a motorcycle was "The Poor Mans ZEN" and that makes sense to me. Riding HEALS me, Robert M. Persig said "When you are riding a motorcycle you are no longer looking at the scene go by through the frame of a window, YOU become part of the scene". Thats the feeling I get. The wind, the smells, the sounds, I LOVE IT!!!
So on a closing note if you would like to be a part of something very special, do some rewarding things for those less fortunate and have some of the best times that can be had on a motorcycle. Come join us at Local 34. Everyone is welcome and you will gain some memories that will remain with you for a lifetime.
